An Adored Ostrich At A Kansas Zoo Has Died After Swallowing A Staff Member’s Keys

The Topeka Zoo & Conservation Center in Kansas has suffered the loss of a much-loved ostrich after it was found to have consumed the keys of a member of the staff.

On Friday, the zoo made the announcement via a social media post that the ostrich named Karen, who was five years old at the time, had scaled the fence surrounding her exhibit, seized the keys belonging to an employee, and then swallowed them. The staff sought the advice of specialists located all across the United States in order to undergo both surgical and non-surgical procedures in order to reduce the impact of the keys. Unfortunately, these attempts did not provide the desired results,” the zoo disclosed.

Euthanasia was performed on Karen on Thursday, and she “passed away in the hands of staff,” according to an email sent out by the Topeka Zoo’s Interim Director, Fawn Moser.

In a statement, Moser expressed his emotions by saying, “We are devastated by the loss of Karen.” “She was more than just an animal; she was a revered member of our community,” said the person. During Karen’s stay with us, our devoted animal care team developed strong ties with her, and our thoughts are with them.
